It is important to manage National Forests to keep the southern pine beetle from spreading to nearby private lands with pine stands. As host to Alabama’s largest population of red-cockaded woodpeckers, the Forest Service has a responsibility to protect and improve habitat. The ongoing restoration treatments of removing loblolly, reestablishing longleaf, and prescribed fire are improving the health and resilience of the Oakmulgee District of Talladega National Forest.
